| Ahoy Matey! Did ye hear the story about Blackboard the Pirate? Well shiver my timbers, there has certainly been a lot of chatter tis past week about the supposed patents of Blackboard the Pirate and the resultin lawsuit against "XYZ." Tis not somethin for those that are lily-livered that be for sure! Give me some grog! It be time perhaps ter get loaded ter the gunwales. Arrrr!!!! I have heard nothin on tis from my mates here in the US but instead email keeps comin in from the UK on tis topic for some reason. Yo-ho-ho!!!

It is not a coincidence that there was talk six or eight months ago that all commercial LMSs would be out of business in a couple of years because of the success of Open Source applications and that the Bb execs were dumping stock a few months ago to lock in their profits from options.
Like the dialup ISPs, outfits like Bb have seen their market share slipping quarter by quarter, and are resorting to desperation methods to keep cash flowing. AOL is giving stuff away, Bb is hoping to extort license fees and intimidate competitors. Both are dinosaurs whose time has passed. At least no one will get hurt in AOL's death throes.

Let's hope the Bucaneer will be back to talk about the state of CMS in the near future. I'd be particularly interested in the connections between CMS and learning materials. More specifically, how the FLOSS model for some learning platforms can go hand-in-hand with providing an alternative to textbooks.
Also, there seems to be a move toward social networking in education. Facebook, SecondLife, etc. Learners are socializing and, doing so, they accomplish a lot. Shouldn't we encourage this?
